Sandwiched between the large Baby Boomer and Millennial Generation, it’s easy to forget about the often-forgotten Generation X. Commonly considered to be born between approximately 1965 and 1981, this generation is currently coming of age in the workplace, as many Baby Boomers retire. Although young Millennial leaders get significant press attention, most new corporate leaders are, in reality, Generation X. As they take control of workplaces, you’ll want to ensure you create compliance trainingsthat speak to them.

Here are common characteristics of Generation X in the workplace and tips for creating a compliance training they’ll love:

  • Independent. As a smaller generation than Baby Boomers and Millennials, many Gen Xers learned to fend for themselves early on. Give your Generation X population opportunities to problem solve on their own first before getting into groups. This generation is also relatively tech savvy and will enjoy online training.
  • Resourceful. Many Generation Xers used their resourcefulness and creativity to become entrepreneurs. For those who are employed, conduct trainings that allow them to think and problem solve, and come up with ways to help the company solve compliance challenges.
  • Adaptable. Generation Xers sometimes have a reputation as being “slackers” due to this trait, but they actually work hard in a wide variety of situations. This trait means that by teaching them the basic rules, they’ll be able to adapt them to a wide variety of situations. Keep trainings relaxed, and create an environment of trust.
  • Cynical. Coming of age during Vietnam and the Cold War, this generation can have some cynicism and skepticism towards authority. Combat this by focusing trainings on employee problem solving and learning, rather than always lecturing in front of the room. Some humor will also help defuse any tension.

Keep in mind, also, that the Generation X generation grew up with computers but not social media. So you may also want to spend extra time describing how corporate compliance works on social media websites.
